Der König in Thule (2023)

General Information

  • Length: ±4 minutes
  • Instrumentation: Mezzo-soprano, piano

Der König in Thule is a song on words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for mezzo-soprano and piano. It was commissioned by Anna Jussen for her Creative Project at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, in which Schubert's interpretations of Goethe's poems were juxtaposed to the interpretation of contemporary composers.

The central theme of time passing is imitated in the piano accompaniment, which behaves like a ticking clock until the climax of the piece. This solemn figure is contrasted by an expressive yet almost recitative vocal line.
