This song cycle originally only consisted of three songs — Geef mij een potlood, Zonnenondergang and Wolkensnee. It was commissioned by Isabelle Storms for her Creative Project as part of her education at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. The fruitfulness of this collaboration led to the songs being reordered and the addition of 's Avonds and Hei da lieve dreupel water one year later.

The full cycle is around 15 minutes long but the songs it consists of can also be performed independently. Some poems were written in Dutch while others were written in Gezelle's native West Flemish. The interpretation and pronunciation of these texts is left up to the performer.
