Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent, is a primordial being in Norse mythology that encircles the human realm biting its own tail. When it releases its tail, the end of the world — Ragnarök — will begin. This concept is translated musically through the use of the Dies Irae motif, as well as the fact the piece ends the way it starts.
