Octet for Winds (2019)
General Information
- Length: ±8 minutes
- Instrumentation: Flute, Clarinet (B♭), 2 Bassoons, 2 Trumpets (C, B♭), Trombone, Bass Trombone
For I SOLISTI's production Mars om de macht (te verspelen), which toured across Flanders and the Netherlands and featured the well-known Belgian actor Jan Decleir, an octet was commissioned with the same instrumentation as Igor Stravinsky's Octet for Wind Instruments (1923), which was also part of the production. The piece was supposed to provide a satisfactory apotheosis to the satirical performance and last around eight minutes. Mimicry of Stravinsky's Fanfare for a New Theatre for two trumpets (1964), which opened the show, was also encouraged.
As an easter egg and reference to the works of Dmitri Shostakovich, his famous DSCH motif was used as the base for the piece. The result is a satirical march with a haunting middle section based on the inversion of the motif.
